A Detailed 2 Week Tanzania Bird Watching Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Getting there
When you arrive in Tanzania, your driver will meet you and take you to a hotel where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Arusha National Park
We start the day by going birdwatching in the Lodge grounds before breakfast, where we can spot fire finches, several types of sunbirds, olive thrush, and bulbuls. After breakfast, we pack our lunches and travel to Arusha National Park, where we will see the Macoa ducks, Egyptian geese, Hotentot teal, Comb duck, and several uncommon waders as we explore the numerous crater lakes. You might be rewarded by trogons and orange-bellied parrots in the jungle. After consuming our packed lunches, we leave the park to embark on a walking safari north of Arusha, where we will see the scarce Spikeh-eeled Lark and Arusha’s only trustworthy location for White Fronted Bee Eaters. In the evening, we return to our Arusha lodge for dinner.
DAY 3: Tarangire National Park
After a leisurely breakfast, we load up our vehicle and head to Tarangire. Searching for Tanzanian endemics such the Ashy Stirling, Yellow Collard Lovebird, and Rufous Tailed Weaver will be the day’s highlights. Have dinner and spend the night at the camp or resort.
Day 4: Tarangire National Park.
Spend the entire day exploring the Tarangire Plains. With more elephants per square kilometer than any other place in East Africa, Tarangire is also home to a large number of birds. We’ll go game driving in the park for the entire day before heading back to our lodge for dinner and the night.
Day 5, 6. Lake Natron
Lesser Flamingos from East Africa come here to breed. Following breakfast at the lodge/camp, travel to Lake Natron, where you will check in and eat lunch while passing the active volcanic mountain Oldoinyo Lengai. You spend the entire afternoon lounging by the lake.
Day 6: Arrival at Serengeti National Park
Following breakfast at your camp or lodge, you will drive to Serengeti National Park, which is located on the northern side of the Serengeti, where you will spend the night.
Day 8: Serengeti National Park
In the northern Serengeti, you can spend a whole day watching birds.
Day 9: Serengeti National Park
Having packed our lunches, we leave for the western Serengeti after breakfast and arrive at sunset. We will observe a variety of guinea fowl and sand grouse on the way to the Lodge. Have dinner and spend the night at the camp or lodge.
Day 10: Serengeti National Park
An entire day spent observing avian life in the Serengeti. Afterwards, you’ll make your way to the lodge or campsite to spend the night.
Day 11: The Serengeti National Park
Serengeti bird excursions before breakfast, searching for local species such the Grey-breasted Spurfowl and Fischer’s Lovebird. Go back to the lodge to have breakfast. Following breakfast, we will spend the remainder of the day bird watching and wildlife viewing; on the way, we should spot Grey-capped social weavers and Usambiro barbets. Getting back to your lodge or tent camp in the evening for dinner and over night
Day 12: The Ngorongoro Crater
Following breakfast, we go outside of the Serengeti and into the Ngorongoro crater, where we will be able to observe the Rufous-tailed Weaver. When lucky, you can witness the golden-winged sunbird soaring above the sky, large groups of lesser and greater flamingos on Soda Lake, and a variety of raptors like bateurs, martial eagles, yellow-billed kites, augur buzards, and black-winged kites . We’ll also be adding a lot more large mammals to our list. Dinner and overnight stay at a lodge included.
Day 13: Lake Eyasi
On the thirteenth day, you’ll reach Lake Eyasi, a sacred site for the last indigenous bushmen of the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. After an early morning of hunting with the Hadzabe bushmen, you return to your camp or lodge for breakfast. In the afternoon, you go to Lake Manyara for the night after doing some nature bird watching in the area, which includes strolling around Lake Eyasi.
Day 14: Lake Manyara National Park
Following breakfast, we go outside of the Serengeti and into the Ngorongoro crater, where we will be able to observe the Rufous-tailed Weaver. Golden-winged Sunbirds, Batleurs, Martial Eagles, Yellow-billed Kites, Augur Buzards, Black-winged Kites, and large flocks of lesser and larger Flamingos on Soda Lake should all be spotted soaring through the air if the chance presents itself. We’ll also be adding a lot more large mammals to our list. Return to the lodge or camp for dinner and the night.
DAY 15: Arusha
Return to Arusha for your Airport flight.
