Day 4: (All day) Tarangire National Park
We are at Tarangire National Park for the entire day today. Known as the “Elephant Playground,” this vast park is home to massive populations of these powerful beasts(Elephants). Nevertheless, Tarangire can compete with the Serengeti in terms of animal numbers and is home to buffalo, lions, wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles. What could you possibly see today? It may be a lone male lion lounging under a tree or three male cheetahs lounging in the sun and growing closer. Perhaps a pair of giraffes contentedly nibbling on the finest acacia branches, or a graceful Grant’s gazelle or zebra leaping off the path. Watch out for kudu and oryx for Tarangire specialties.
It’s wise to pay attention to the small creatures here, as in other parks. The elegance of the giraffe or the strength and grandeur of an elephant can easily captivate one. Ask your guide to locate an agama lizard or you, preferably a male that changes color in response to temperature! Or a hyrax, often called a pimpi, a little, unremarkable animal about 30 cm long that is surprisingly linked to elephants!
You will rarely walk past a tree without noticing something of avian interest. A blue-eared starling or lilac-breasted roller could be a striking display of color. There are many ostriches, and it’s impossible not to laugh when you see the well-known, stoic-looking secretary bird clumsily padding across the plains.
The park is particularly well-known for its acacia woodland, rolling savannah, and magnificent baobab trees. Wear a scarf over your lips to protect your mouth from the dust, but it’s worth it to see so much wildlife. Return to the lodge in the evening for some downtime and the night.

In the UNESCO-designated Serengeti, 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles and about 200,000 zebras accompany the wildebeests in search of new food. As you envision African wildlife, you may hear the exotic sounds of nearly 6 million hooves pounding the vast plains of the Serengeti. The numerous year-round water sources benefit the numerous herd animals, including wildebeest, and are supplemented by seasonal migratory populations. Along with a plethora of highland birds, you can spot buffalo, Thomson’s gazelle, and eland in the area. Hippos inhabit the swamps and pools, and there are many different kinds of birds in the highlands. A portion of the crater bottom is occupied by Lake Magadi, where flamingos are frequently spotted.
