Day 1-2: Volcanoes National Park

Detailed 6 Days Great Apes Rwanda safari

Day 1: Volcanoes National Park

You will be collected from Kigali and taken on a private city tour (genocide memorial entrance included), before transferring to Musanze.

In the afternoon, enjoy a guided village walk to meet the communities living side by side with the forest. This is also an excellent opportunity to view Rwandan way of life, as the women demonstrate basket weaving, cooking and crafts.

Day 2: Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy the wildlife encounter of a lifetime as you trek the mountain gorillas. You will join a group of up to eight people and spend one hour observing the gorillas. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest watching these gentle giants. It is amazing to think there are only around 1000 of these beautiful creatures left but numbers are growing! In the afternoon, enjoy a shared boat cruise on the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo.

Day 3: Kibuye

In the morning, trek the golden monkeys – they are a delight to watch as they spring from tree to tree with their bright bushy tails!

Alternative to golden monkey trek – half-day guided canoe trail along the Mukungwa river.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before transferring to Kibuye.

Day 4: Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a boat trip to Napoleon’s island, famous for the colony of fruit bats (also known as one bar island because it only has one bar!). Soak up the stunning views, take a dip in the lake or stop off at the hot springs. You may even catch a glimpse of Nyiragongo Volcano in Goma.

In the afternoon, continue onward to Nyungwe National Park where you stay for two nights.

Day 5: Nyungwe Forest National Park

This morning embark on another adventure with the great apes as you journey deep into the rain forest to search for the chimpanzees and view a variety of flora, fauna, insects and bird-life.

Rwanda is home to around 400 chimpanzees however sightings are not guaranteed since the chimps move quickly and spend most of their time in the trees due to the dense forest.

After lunch, venture onto the tree-top canopy bridge walk situated 50m above the ground. Enjoy a birds-eye view of the rainforest.

Day 6: End of Itinerary

Transfer with your guide around 7hrs to Kigali stopping at Butare on the way to view the National Museum and King´s Palace. (Flight option available at extra cost).

Enjoy lunch in Butare before continuing to Kigali. There may be time for a little shopping before transferring to the Airport (evening flight recommended).
