The route was pioneered during colonial days and then abandoned for many years but was re-opened in the early ’90s.
The major goal for climbing Mount Kenya, by all technical climbers is to reach point Leanna at 4985m, before sunrise, so that they can enjoy the awe-inspiring moments when the sun is rising over the impressive African plains.
Mount Kenya climbing via the Burguret is undoubtedly for the physically strong trekkers, those who prefer a more private/independent hike, away from the crowd. This path is characterized by no huts, rough underfoot, frequently used by elephants than humans, muddy during wet season, and dense stands of giant bamboo and montane forests, though its wilderness track, that chances are high for trekkers to encounter numerous vegetation types and animal species like the elephants and buffaloes (mostly around the camps).
Whereas descending via the Chogoria route provide the most scenic views and a complete a trek of the mountain.
In a nutshell, you will enjoy rewarding views of the magnificent Mt Kenya snowy peaks, and down to waterfalls, tarns and lava flows in the Gorges Valley itself.

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Day 2: Giant Bamboo Camp
Elevation: (2,600 m/ 8530 ft) to (3,600m / 11811 ft).
Habitat: Montane Forest
In the morning, set off from Nairobi after breakfast, You will be driven passed the vast agricultural farmlands and landscapes to the magnificent Mount Kenya slopes. Enroute you cross the Equator line, reaching Nanyuki town in time for lunch. Then later on meet the cooking team, porters, and the guide, with whom you will climb Mt. Kenya. Commence trekking instantly after briefing from the gate to Githiuru forest, arriving at the gate for registration, after then you will ascend up through dense stands of towering bamboo inhabited by numerous wildlife. Reach Giant Bamboo Camp overlooking the panoramic views that Mount Kenya has to offer.
Day 3: Giant Bamboo Camp – Highlands Castle (3700m)
Elevation: (2,600m / 8530ft) to(3,700m /12139ft)
Habitat: Moorland zones.
At 0800 hrs you will walk through luxuriant bamboo yields, rosewood and heather zone to moorland of tussock grasses, Senecio and Lobelias. This trek will test your endurance, patience & ability. Enroute, enjoy picnic lunch. Adventurous climbers can hike to the top of Highland Castle cliff and enjoy spectacular views of the Castle like rock formation and splendid views of the surrounding area. Dine and sleep close to the sheer lava cliffs of the “Highland Castle”.
Day 4:Highland Castle-Shipton’s Camp
Elevation: 900m Ascent – 365m descent
Habitat: Moorland
Distance: 10 km/6 miles
Rise up early to a delicious breakfast, Trek to the edge of the high peaks then take a clockwise direction of the summit loop trail, which offers eye catching views of the jagged volcanic peaks and shimmering glaciers. Turquoise tarns enclosed in the valleys, eagles and buzzards soar overhead – here you will be on the equator! Enroute you will have picnic lunch. Then walk down the Mackinder’s Valley to Shiptons hut and sleeping low is excellent for acclimatization.
Day 5: Climbing Lenana Peak!
Pre-dawn attempt of the Lenana Peak starts at 0300hrs. The early start helps to get you to the top of Mount Kenya in perfect time for African sunrise. Climb for about 3-4 hours through the frozen scree and proceed on a rocky path with some very minor scrambling, and finally arrive at Lenana Peak-(4985m), where you will be able to Mt. Kilimanjaro is visible from the horizon, on a clear day.
Descend for 3 hours from point Lenana to have breakfast by Hall Tarns in the beautiful gorges Valley, then another 3 hours to Shipton’s camp.

Day 6: Descend to Meru Bandas
Trek down to Minto’s hut for full breakfast in the morning, take arrest and slope further to Mt Kenya bandas along the gorges valley where you will enjoy impressive views of The Temple, Lake Michaelson, Mushroom rocks and Giant billiards table. Day 7: Trek to Chogoria Gate. Transfer to Nairobi
This morning after breakfast, descend for 4 hours through beautiful Chogoria Forest to the chogoria gate and to the road – the final leg of our Mt. Kenya ascent journey. Then return to Nairobi.
