Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali -Transfer to Virunga National Park
Depending on your suggested pick up point, the driver guide will be right on time to brief you about your 5 days Virunga Gorilla trekking & Akagera Wildlife safari experience. Thereafter, hope into the customized 4×4 safari Jeep, and head on a a 5 hour drive from Kigali, to Goma border to check in with the tourism office , located near the Grande Barriere border post. At the office you will submit your valid passports, valid Visa, so that they can give you the Gorilla trekking permit to present for the next day Mountain Gorilla trekking experience..
In a convoy of armed guards, you will be transferred by the Vuranga officials to Kibumba tented Camp, or Bukima Tented Camp or Mikeno Lodge, depending on your accommodation of preference.
Relax the entire evening, then head for dinner , followed by a peaceful nightbrest.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park
Have breakfast very early in the morning, and meet the driver for a transfer by road(4×4) to Bukima Police post, where all treks begin. You will find park rangers who will: register you, brief your about gorilla trekking, allocated you in a group of eight, assign a gorilla family that you will looking for, and don’t forget hire porters. At once you will set off with the ranger guide to look for the endangered mountain Gorilla species in the lush Virunga Forest. Gorilla trekking may take at least 1-5 hours depending on the walking pace of the trekkers, or how far the gorilla family might have moved from the previous location.
Upon finding them, you will stay in their presence for at most 1 hour, as you interact and take so many photos and videos.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then after proceed to Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphange to visit orphaned and rescued gorillas.
Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.
Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park
In the morning after breakfast, join the convoy to be escorted to Virunga National Park border of Grande Barrier, to renew your Rwanda VISA. You will then coonect with your driver guide who will stop at Lake Kivu for lunch. After here, you will proceed to Kigali for an overnight at Step Town (budget), Des Milles Collines for mid-range or Kigali Serena Lodge for luxury.
Day 4: Transfer to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, head with the driver on a 2 hour drive to Akagera National Park for a game drive. Akagera National Park is the only savannah wildlife in Rwanda, where you expect to spot animals like: lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Giraffes, and the smaller animals the Bushbucks. You will arrive in perfect time for lunch at your booked accommodation.
Proceed for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema , after your lunch break. Animals to spot include water animals like Hippos. This is also a spectacular spot, for bird enthusiasts . Return for dinner and later join others for dinner, followed by an overnight.
Day 5: Morning game drive and Depart for Kigali
After breakfast, take the early morning game drive for about 4 hours Return to the lodge to check out, and proceed to Kigali. If you still have some ample time, you may do a full city tour, visiting interesting places like the Genocide memorial sites, among others. You will then be dropped at the airport, or your post 5 days Virunga gorilla trekking and Akagera Wildlife safari accommodation.
