Game drives in Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park offers both day and night game drives.  Viewing the Big 5 out of the 8000 large animal species, is the key activity in any Rwanda Safari. Visitors on a day game viewing drive have the opportunity to spot numerous animals including Lions, Zebras, Elephants, Leopards, Giraffes, Rhinos, Buffaloes, Antelopes, impalas, topis. While it is also possible for visitors to go for night game drives, where hyenas, busha babies, serval cats, civets can be spotted.

Day game drives in Akagera National Park can be done are done for 3 hours, either from 7:30-9:00 am in the morning, or from 2:00pm -5:00pm in the evening, at a cost of $30 per person, while the Night game drives for about 2 hours costs $40 person.

Boat trips/Cruise on Akagera National Park.

Boat cruse trips are an excellent way to enjoy the breathtaking views the park offers. Lake Ihema is the second largest Lake in Rwanda, which offers beautiful sights of wild game like Hippos, crocodiles,  plus large population of Elephants, Buffaloes and several bird species like America Dipper, Billon’s crake, African Fishe eagle, Africa jacana, great cormorant, .

Lake Ihema  has provision of 4 boat trip schedules each day, that said; at 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 3:00pm, and 4:30pm respectively. Nonetheless, there are also non scheduled boat trip  offers for those who would love private, and solitude trips on for honeymoons, family among others.

Birding activity in Akagera National Park

Generally, birds are spotted within the park, that said, visitors have the chance to sight numerous bird species, on either game drives or boat cruise on Lake Ihema. However, Akagera National Park hosts more than 500 species of birds, which includes African Fish Eagle, Open billed stork, egret, cormorants, Senegal lapwings, African darter, not forgetting the notable shoebill Stork, which is usually spotted hunting fish More birds to catch sight off include: hamerkop, Caruthers’s Cisticola, pied crow, black headed weaver, fan-tailed widow bird, violet’s black weaver, long crested Eagle and more- all these make the park, a birding haven for bird enthusiasts.

Cultural Encounters

Spending time at the Humure Refugee Village, offers a touch an incredible and awe-inspiring cultural experience in Akagera  National Park. With  them, you will learn about what made them flee from their ancestral home in Tanzania to their present refugee village. By the help of an experienced guide, you will also learn how to make local ghee, several dishes as well as learning pottery art by making few samples of cooking pots, plates, cups using clay.

Fishing Activity in Akagera National Park

Bothe Lake Ihema & Lake Shakani offers an opportunity for fishing in Akagera National Park. The lake is famous for its fish species of Tilapia & Catfish. Visitors relax while fishing by the Lake shoreline, after which they are allowed to cook their catch at the campsite’s bonfire later in the evening.

Note that, any visitor who would love to take part in fishing must carry their own fishing eupment.
