The Virunga Mountains

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of volcanic peaks straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rich in geological and ecological significance, the mountains have long been recognized as a unique natural wonder. They derive their name from the local Kinyarwanda word “ibirunga,“ meaning volcanoes. The region has a storied history as one of the few remaining habitats for mountain gorillas, which were made famous through the work of primatologist Dian Fossey. The primary gateway is Kigali International Airport, located approximately 2.5 hours’ drive from Volcanoes National Park. Well-maintained roads lead to the town of Musanze, which serves as the base for most activities in the region. Visitors arriving from Uganda or the DRC can also access the mountains via border crossings, though additional travel permits may be required.

Best Time to Visit The Virunga Mountains

The best time to visit the Virunga Mountains is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. During these months, the weather is favorable, with less rain, making trekking and other outdoor activities easier and more enjoyable. However, the region’s equatorial climate ensures lush greenery year-round, and gorilla trekking can still be done during the wetter months with proper preparation.
