How to get to Masai Mara National Reserve

Getting To Masai Mara: Maasai Mara National Reserve can be accessed by both flight(plane) and road. While traveling to Maasai Mara National Reserve by road takes a longer journey to reach by a rental car on either a guided tour/safari or on self drive. The easiest, convenient and fastest way to get to Masai Mara National Reserve is to fly in.

There are several airstrips where chattered flights (from either Safari link or Air Kenya) can land. Then after  you can be picked in a 4×4 safari jeep by either your tour operator’s driver guide, hotel river guide or hire a 4×4 vehicle from a nearby car rental agency near the airstrip to travel by road to the Reserve.

Getting To Masai Mara in 6 Hours on a 4×4 Guided Jeep From Nairobi

A 4×4 safari Vehicle is required for traveling to reach Maasai Mara national Reserve. Maasai Mara National Reserve is located Northwest of Kenya in Narok town. It is easy to visit the reserve independently on self drive or with a driver on a guided tour. The drive on paved roads from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport takes about 6 hours and the roads through the park are navigable by 4WD(highly recommended)

Getting to Maasai Mara National Reserve By Flight

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), is the major entry airport, among all Kenya International Airports, where most Kenya safaris depart & return.

There are two flights scheduled daily to Maasai Mara National Reserve by either Safarilink, Air kenya, from the nearest airport of Jommo Kenyatta (JKIA)  OR Wilson Airport. These two primary companies offer transported and planned departures from Nairobi to Masai Mara, and you can book your tickets in advance by either a travel planner or on the web.

Remember, that the flights are much of the time on little airplanes and they depend on climate conditions. It is additionally better to reconfirm your flight plans before you leave.

Morning flights depart Nairobi at 0730 hrs to arrive in any of airstrips at 0810 hrs , and 1030hrs to arrive at 1110hrs,  while the afternoon departures leave Nairobi at 14:00pm to  arrive in Masai mara at 14:40pm

While Flights returning from Maasai Mara to Nairobi follows: 11:15 to 13:00 and 14:45pm to 16:15pm

Airstrips in Masai Mara

Maasai Mara National Park does not have an international Airport by itself, because it is a wilderness region, rather it is served by Weather gravel Airstrips including Keekorok, Serena Airstrip,  Musiara Airstrip, Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, Siana Conservancy, Ol Kiombo Airstrip, Ngerende Airstrip, Olare Orok Mara North Airstrip, Angama Airstrip and Olseki.

From Airstrips,  it is possible to proceed to Masai Mara National Reserve or the Accommodation (Lodge/Hotel or Camp)  by road on a 4×4 rental car on self drive or 4WD safari jeep by the Company.

Getting To Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve

Note: We recommend flying directly  from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, because it is the nearest, with an approximate flight schedule of 1hr to land in any of the airstrips and transfer from the Airstrips to the accommodations, depend on the Lodge’s location.

Generally, getting to the Masai Mara  is relatively straight forward process, whether you decided to fly or drive. The Reserve is effectively accessible from Nairobi. With a little planning and preparation You can be en route to encounter the inconceivable natural life, and staggering scenes of the Masai Mara.
