5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Sirimon-Chogoria Route. This 5 days Mt. Kenya climbing ascends from the Sirimon route and descends through Chogoria route. The west Sirimon route traverses through the most dry & breathtaking forest tracts of Mount Kenya, which comprises of giant trees, rocky terrain and the pleasant Mackinders Valley before descending via the most beautiful Chogoria route which encompasses the virgin bamboo zone and the highland forests with a blend of the dazzling Gorges Valley, waterfalls and tarns.
The 5 days Sirimon-chogoria route is undeniably the most spectacular, dramatic, driest and most distinct route, to reach point Lenana, as well as recommended for acclimatization.
From Nairobi, the 5 day Mount Kenya climbing sirimon-chogoria route starts on the northwest side of the mountain near Nanyuki at Sirimon Park Gate, and ascends to Old Moses hut day 1, shipton’s hut on day 2 & 3(for proper acclimatization), Lenana peak summit & decent to Meru bandas on day 4, down Chogoria gate and ends in Nairobi on the 5th Day.

Detailed Itinerary For 5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Sirimon Chogoria safari
Day 1: Nairobi – Sirimon gate- Old Moses/Judimier Hut. ( 3,300m)
Duration: 3-4 hrs,
Distance: 9km
Elevation Gain: 680m ascent.
Pick up from Nairobi by Aloyo Safaris professional Driver guide, who will transfer you to Nanyuki town for lunch. En route, you will cross the equator to the Sirimon Park gate (2660m) for registration. There after, you will ascend up through breathtaking montane forest, bamboo and giant heather zone before reaching the high altitude moorland to Old Moses camp 3,300m for dinner and a goodnight sleep.
Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton camp (4200m). 7 hrs, 14km, 900m ascent
Climbing Mount Kenya Through Sirimon Route
Have breakfast early in the morning, then start walking following the track up hill to the junction, where you turn right. Take a short break, after which, you will follow the path crossing Ontulili River before taking the right turn contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North River and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the Shipton Camp. This camp is suitably situated below the towering peaks and glaciers. Resident population is of Rock hyrax and sun birds. Dine and sleep in Shipton’s camp.
Day 3: Shipton Camp – Acclimatization Day
On this day, we recommend taking a rest for better acclimatization at the Shipton camp. You can spend the day taking Short walks during the day to climb Oblong and Hauseberg tarns gaining an elevation of 370m before returning to the camp for lunch. Afternoon is at leisure
Day 4: Shipton – Point Lenana(4,985m)- Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m)
Duration: 11-12 hrs
Elevation Gain: 785 ascent, 2,085 descent.
At 0300 hours, start your predawn trek for about 3-4 hours to reach point Lenana in time when the sun is rising.
The climb begins on frozen scree and joins the rocky track with some very minor scrambling. While at the peak, you will have beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is also visible from the horizon. After capturing lgood moments and taking photographs, start your descent downwards to Minto`s hut for full breakfast. Then after, slope further to Mt Kenya Bandas along the Gorges valley where you can enjoy good views of the Temple, Lake Michaelson, Mushroom rocks and Giants billiards table Mountain. Dinner and overnight rest at the Mt Kenya Bandas.
Day 5: Meru Bandas- Chogoria town. 2 hrs, 10km
Upon having breakfast, descend through a broad track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet our driver in our 4×4 vehicle for transfer to Chogoria town and further to Nairobi arriving by 17:00hrs.
