Detailed Zanzibar Island Horse Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Getting To Zanzibar

Once you touch down in the warm, inviting paradise of Zanzibar, one of the Z Hotel drivers will be there to greet you and take you on a scenic drive of about 1.5 hours to Nungwi. Once you check in, take some time to kick back and relax. Then, why not enjoy a cocktail up on the rooftop and grab dinner at Sexy Fish restaurant, both located at the Z Hotel? Just a heads up, dinner and drinks aren’t included.

If the tides are good, you’ll get to enjoy a 30-minute swim with the horses in the afternoon. Swimming with horses is something you’ll always remember. They do this without saddles, using just natural halters. Anyone can swim, even if you’re just starting out, but you do need to know how to swim. You can only swim with horses when the tide is high. Now’s the perfect moment to snap some amazing photos, and your guides are always ready to help you capture those memories!

You’ll find a lovely fruit basket and a bottle of sparkling wine waiting for you when you arrive. Stay the night at the Z Hotel, right on Nungwi beach – includes breakfast!

Day 2: Sandbanks Ride

Following breakfast, you will head to the Zanzibar Horse Club stables. The horses will be ready to mount here, and you will soon be riding through the settlement of Nungwi to the Sandbanks. These remarkable sandbanks emerge solely during exceptionally low tides and are accessible for about 15 days each month, featuring the finest and most secluded beaches in Zanzibar. Such white sand and clear water are truly a rare sight! This ride is intended solely for experienced riders, as it includes extensive cantering and walking along a rugged coastline.

Upon arriving at the sandbanks, you will find limitless chances for cantering and capturing stunning photos and videos. Take a leisurely 1.5-hour ride. Make an appointment for your complimentary one-hour massage at the Sky Spa in the afternoon.

Make the most of your day at your own pace — unwind at the beach, try out water sports like SUP, snorkelling, and scuba diving, or explore some of the nearby villages. Activities, lunch, and dinner will be at your own expense. Stay overnight at the Z Hotel, located on Nungwi Beach – (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 3: Kilindi Bay

How long you want to ride depends on the tides and your vacation plans. Your typical morning routine begins with breakfast. You will begin your journey south from the stables onto the main beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa. At regular intervals, you will walk, trot, or canter along this breathtaking coastline. Your journey will take you to Kilindi Bay, an excellent spot for photography, before venturing inland to the Kilindi farmlands and the secluded villages of Kidoti. Along the way, you will navigate through rural communities and lush woodland forests that are seldom explored by tourists.

Upon your arrival at Kidoti Villas & Ranch, you have the opportunity to explore the paddocks and interact with the horses while savouring some refreshments. Following a 30-minute break, you will remount the horses and return to the northern beaches, concluding the ride with a 7 km canter along the pristine shores of Kendwa and Nungwi. The ride lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, not including breaks. Leisurely afternoon to unwind at Z. Later in the day, you and the horses will go for a second 30-minute swim—if the tides allow it. Spend the night at Nungwi Beach’s Z Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)

Day 4: Short Ride Or Horse Swim

Take a leisurely ride around the outskirts of Nungwi Village today before continuing north-east to the Nungwi Light House, where you may join the beach. You will make your way back to the beachside stables at a trot and a walk. You’ll go out at high tide, take off your saddles, and wade into the pleasantly warm water if you haven’t yet discovered the wonders of horse swimming.

You are free to do as you like with the remainder of the day. Perhaps take a dhow ride, go snorkelling, or just do nothing at all after lunch—what could be better? Dinner and beverages are available at the hotel, or you can go outside to check out some of the eateries and hotel bars in the Nungwi area.

Day 5: Departure

Nothing compares to seeing the sunrise from a horse and taking a long canter along the water’s edge on your final morning. Go for an early morning ride while the beaches are still deserted. It’s true freedom. In time for your departure flight, you will be returned to Stone Town. Before you leave for the airport, we may set up a tour for you if you want to see this UNESCO Heritage Site.
