Detailed Itinerary For 6 Days Rongai Kilimanjaro Trek
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Start the trek at Rongai Gate(1,950 m/6,398 ft) after breakfast. Complete park registration formalities and meet your trekking team. Begin the trek through farmland and dense forest, with opportunities to spot wildlife. Enjoy lunch en route. Arrive at Simba Camp (2,650m/8,694ft) in the late afternoon. Settle into camp, relax, and enjoy dinner.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Elevation: 2,750 m to 3,600 m
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, continue the trek, leaving the forest behind and entering the moorland zone. Ascend gradually, with views of the surrounding landscape opening up. Lunch will be served along the trail. Arrive at Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m/11,811ft) in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day resting, hydrating, and acclimatizing.
Day 3: Kikelewa camp to Mawenzi Tarn hut
Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
Distance: 7km
Hiking Time: 4 hours
Habitat: Semi-Desert
After breakfast, continue the trek, ascending through the alpine desert landscape. Enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi Peak along the way. Lunch will be served along the trail. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330m/14,206ft) in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day resting, hydrating, and preparing for the next day’s trek.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,695 m
Distance: 8km
Hiking Time: 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, continue the trek, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Ascend to Kibo Hut (4,703m/15,430ft), your base camp for the summit attempt. Lunch will be served along the trail. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Early dinner and an early bedtime to rest before the summit push.
Day 5: Summit Day! Kibo Huts camp to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts camp
Elevation: 4,695 m to 5,895 m to 3,690 m
Distance: 4 km up, 14 km down
Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert.
Start the summit push in the early hours of the morning, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) at sunrise. Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and breakfast. Continue descending to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,205ft) for overnight stay. Lunch will be served en route. Celebrate your summit success and rest at Horombo Hut. Note: Descending from the summit to Horombo Hut is a long and challenging day. Pace yourself and listen to your guides.
Day 6: Horombo Huts camp to Marangu Gate to Moshi
Elevation: 3,690 m to 1,830 m to 1,387 m
Distance: 18 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
After breakfast, continue the descent through the moorland and rainforest. Arrive at Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Say farewell to your trekking team and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your accomplishment and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
