How To Get To Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

By road, Mgahinga National Park is located 15 km (9.3 mi), south of Kisoro town,  and about 55 km(34 mi) west of Kabale City, which takes 9 hours to drive from Kampala. While  there are also daily flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kihihi Airstrip, then lands at Kisoro Airport.

How To Get To Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Getting there, can be by road & by flight. Visitors have the option of traveling by road in 9 hours from Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, and Kisoro to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park  or fly direct to Kisoro Airport/Airstrip, then connect by road in a 4×4 safari jeep to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

How to Get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located 15 km(9.3 mi) south of Kisoro town & about 55km (34 mi) West of Kabale City. Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Visitors have the option to Fly directly into Kisoro Airport/Airstrip located in Kisoro district in south Western Uganda & begin their trip, from there by road to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Fly-in safaris are also common comprising of chattered flights taking travelers to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or travelers can also opt for a drive overland on a 4×4 safari jeep to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Getting to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park By Road.

Driving From Kampala via  Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, and Kisoro to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park by road will take about 9 hours on self-drive or guided tour. The journey is 510 km (317 mi) long , and it can be accessed by road from Queen Elizabeth National Park in 6 hours for a distance of 310km (193 mi). Travelers  expect to see magnificent views of the Kigezi hills, traditional homesteads, terraced farmlands,  roadside markets among others during their drive.

Mgahinga National Park can also be reached by road (4WD) from: Buhoma sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in about 4-5 hours’ drive, Kabale in in about 6-7 hours while from Lake Bunyonyi, it takes approximately 3 hours’ drive.

Besides Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can also be accessed by road from Rwanda. Upon landing by flight in Kigali international Airport, travelers journey to Mgahinga Gorilla national Park by road (on self-drive or guided tour) via Cyanika border, in approximately 4 hours drive.

Travelers can also reach Mgahinga Gorilla National Park by bus (public means), from Kampala to Kisoro, then connect by a taxi to Ntebeko park headquarters. There are several bus companies offering road transfers from  Kampala  or Kigali to Kisoro Town, namely; Jaguar, Horizon, Bismakan…

Although they are cheap, we don’t recommend public means, because it isn’t reliable, and takes a lot of time, making stop overs, hence inconveniencing travel plans. The better way to  travel is by either hiring a car for self drive or travel with a reliable tour operator company like Aloyo Safaris.

Flying to Mgahinga  Gorilla National Park.

Aerolink Uganda Limited offers daily chattered flights, From Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airstrip to Kisoro Airport/Airstrip, or Kihihi Airstrip then connect by road to Ntebeko park headquarters  at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

All chattered flights to Kisoro are usually in the mornings due to the unpredictable weather conditions. Flights depart Entebbe International Airport,  at 0700hrs am and arriving at Kisoro Airport 8:10 am, and leaves the park at 8:25 am, to arrive in Entebbe International Airport at 1125 hrs.

Flying to  from Entebbe to Kisoro Airport is a shorter route, quick, secure & convenient way to reach the park, for tourists who don’t  like long distance driving.
