Climbing Mount Kenya in 3 days  is a challenging trek to Lenana peak (third highest point of Mount Kenya), Mount Kenya’s highest point but Africa’s 2nd highest . The climb follows a one way path through Old Moses and shipton’s camp, which is only recommended for acclimatized mountain hikers with enough physical strength and ability to climb.

This 3 days mount Kenya climbing departs from and returns to Nairobi. The First day climb starts with a transfer to the foothills of Mount Kenya. It then continues for  3-4 hours trek through the forest, bamboo, rosewood and heather zone to Old Moses on day 1. This continues for another 7-8 hours  hike to shipton’s camp. There after, the technical hike ascends up Lenana Point/peak at 4985m(third highest point of Mount Kenya), followed by a gental descent back down to Old Moses Camp, where you will be transferred back to Nairobi.

Itinerary By Day Highlight For 3 days Mount Kenya Climbing

Day 1: Nairobi -Drive to Old Moses Camp(3,300m) Via Nanyuki

Days 2: Trek Old Moses Camp to Shipton’s Hut (4,236m)

Day 3: Trek from Old Shipton’s Hut to Lenana Peak to Foothills of Mount Kenya National Park

Detailed Itinerary For 3 Days Mount Kenya Climbing-Sirimon route

Day 1: Old Moses Camp (3300m)

At 7:00 am, You will be met by our professional driver guide who will transfer you the western  slopes at the base of Mount Kenya, where you will have lunch. Thereafter proceed for briefing about the regulations for climbing mount Kenya along the Sirimon route/trail in 3 days, as well as meeting your porters and guides.

Then in good climbing gear, begin trekking along the sirimon route, with enroute crossing of the equator, reaching the Sirimon Park gate (at 2600m) in 1 hour for registration. From here, continue further with your hike for 3-4 hours to Old Moses Camp, passing through forests, bamboo, rosewood and heather zone.

Day 2: Climb to Shipton’s  Hut (4,236)

Following your breakfast early in the morning, embark on your longest and remarkable 7 to 8 hours trek to Shipton’s hut/camp, which also proves  each individuals physical strength and ability. On this day, you will ascend high going up to 900m of the surreal valley of Mackinder with its unique vegetation of the giant Lobelia,  groundsel, and the equatorial African Mountains.

Enroute you will have lunch, while diner and overnight will be at Shipton’s hut (4236m), situated  just beneath the glaciers and jagged peaks of bare rocks, that surround the main summits.

Day 3: Ascend to Lenana Peak and descend to Sirimon Park gate, & transfer to Nairobi.

Wake up at 0300 hours for a cup of coffee, then in good hiking gear, and a bright head torch, depart for the summit attempt. You will hike up steep screes, then connect to the bare rocky track to Lenana peak, reaching at 4985m in time for sunrise. On a clear day, you will be endowed with the natural beauty of the Kilimanjaro, at a distance of 340km to the south.

Climbing to the Lenana peak is quite challenging, trekking through frozen scree, that causes some scrambling towards the final stretch, as you arrive at the summit..

Upon reaching the summit at 0630 hours, you will enjoy the magnificent sun rise above the equator.  Spend a few time celebrating your victory. You may or may not have some snacks at this point, then later on embark on your descent downwards to shipton’s camp (While for those on a 4 days Mount Kenya climb rest here), for a heavy lunch, after then proceed with your 3-4 hours’ descent to Old Moses Camp/hut . You will then continue further to the base, where you will be picked up by driver guide, who will then transfer you to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel in the evening for dinner and an overnight at the Lodge.
