Virunga National Park is an Old National Park in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is famous for Mountain gorilla trekking & Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Hiking, while Volcanoes National Park, just like Virunga, is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas, although a large population of habituated Golden Monkeys for tracking also live here.

Day by Day Detailed Itinerary For 5 Days Virunga & Volcanoes Safari

Day #1: Kigali -Transfer to Virunga National Park

Depending on your suggested pick up  point,  the driver guide will be right on time to brief you about your 5 days Virunga Gorilla trekking & Akagera Wildlife safari experience. Thereafter, hope into the customized 4×4 safari Jeep, and head on a a 5 hour drive from Kigali, to Goma border to check in with the tourism office , located near the Grande Barriere border post.  At the office you will submit your valid passports, valid Visa, so that they  can give you the Gorilla trekking permit to present for the next day  Mountain Gorilla trekking experience..

In a convoy of armed guards, you will be transferred by the Vuranga officials to Kibumba tented Camp, or Bukima Tented Camp or Mikeno Lodge, depending on your accommodation of preference.

Relax the entire evening, then head for dinner , followed by a peaceful nightbrest.

Day #2: Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park

Have breakfast very early in the morning, and meet the driver for a transfer by road(4×4) to Bukima Police post, where all treks begin. You will find park rangers who will: register you, brief your about gorilla trekking, allocated you in a group of eight, assign a gorilla family that you will looking for, and don’t forget hire porters. At once you will set off with the ranger guide to look for the endangered mountain Gorilla species in the lush Virunga Forest. Gorilla trekking may take at least 1-5 hours depending on the walking pace of the trekkers, or how far the gorilla family might have moved from the previous location.

Upon finding them,  you will stay in their presence for at most 1 hour, as you interact and take so many photos and videos.

Return to the lodge for lunch, then after proceed to Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphange to visit orphaned and rescued gorillas.

Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Day #3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

In the morning after breakfast, join the convoy to be escorted to Virunga National Park border of Grande  Barrier, to renew  your Rwanda VISA. You will then connect with your driver guide who will stop at Lake Kivu for lunch. You will the be transferred to  Muhabura Hotel (budget), Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge – mid-range  or 5 Volcanoes Gorilla Lodge (Luxury)

Day #4:  Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Have an early breakfast, then be transferred to Volcanoes National Park  headquarters for briefing about Golden Monkey Trekking rules and regulations.

Embark your Golden Monkey trekking along the ranger guide. You will enter into th the lush forest of Volcanoes National Park, to look for the Golden Monkeys. This hike might be challenging, but its worth it.

 

Golden Monkey may take from 1 to 7 hours , including 1 full hour of staying up-close with the Golden Monkeys. After  then return to the park headquarters to meet your driver guide, who will transfer you to visit the twin Lake enroute. Then later arrive in the Lodge later in the evening  for dinner and an overnight sleep.

Day #5: Drive Back to Kigali

You will be up early for breakfast at your convenient time. Check out of your accommodation, and meet your driver guide & start your 3 hour drive to Kigali from Ruhengeri. You can choose to go on a city tour, in case you still have time.
