This exhilarating 5 days Virunga Gorilla trekking & Nyungwe chimpanzee tracking safari  journeys  two primate destination, that is Congo’s Virunga National Park and Nyungwe National Park for Mountain Gorilla trekking, Chimpanzee tracking and  Canopy walking  respectively.  During this safari, you will start from Rwanda (Kigali) and end there, as shown in the Itinerary below.

Detailed Itinerary For 5 Days Virunga & Nyungwe Safari

Day #1:  Kigali – Transfer to Virunga National Park

In the morning, connect with our driver guide, who will start with briefing about the 5 days Virunga Gorilla trekking & Nyungwe Forest National Park chimpanzee trekking safari. Thereafter  set off with the driver guide in a 4×4 safari jeep to Virunga national Park in the Eastern part of Congo. Enroute,  you will have lunch,  enjoy the countryside scenic views, Rwanda’s impressive landscape & the magnificent rolling hills and the beautiful Lake Kivu among others, as you continue to Grande Barriere  Border in Goma to acquire your Congo Visa & Virunga Mountain Gorilla Permit.

You will then be transferred by Virunga armed guards in a convoy to Bukima  to check in  at a lodge for dinner and an overnight.

Day #2: Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

Meet at the park headquarter early for briefing about the Gorilla trekking rules & regulations, & gorilla group allocation. You will then leave with the trekker guide, a ranger with/without a porter to look for the Mountain gorillas in the thick forest of Virunga National Park.  Gorilla trekking may lust between 2 to 6 hours depending on factors such as: How far the gorillas may have moved from the previous position, the physical & Mental strength of  the trekkers.

Only one hour will be allowed for all trekkers to stay in the presence of the Gorillas as you watch them carry out their daily chores as well as taking photos, after which you will return to the lodge to check out.

You will then be transferred  back to Goma, via the Grande Barrier Border for Rwanda Visa to Gisenyi, where you will connect with the driver guide for a transfer to your lodge.

You will enjoy beautiful spots like terraced farmlands, beautiful scenery, then check into the lodge for dinner & overnight.

Day #3: Transfer Nyungwe national Park

You will have breakfast in the morning, connect with the driver guide and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park, whereby you will be filled with spectacular views of coffee plantations, traditional homesteads, local people… arriving at your lodge to check in, then followed by dinner and overnight rest.

Day #4: Chimpanzee trekking & Canopy Walk.

You will be up early for breakfast, then along with your packed water & energy snacks, proceed  to the park headquarters for briefing about the rules and regulations for chimpanzee trekking.

Like Gorilla trekking, you will set off in a group of 8,  under the company of an experienced ranger guide, and porters (only after booking them), to search for chimpanzees, which may last for about 2-5 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees have relocated to.

Only 1 hour will be allowed for you to interact with the Chimpanzees, as you take photos. You will also enjoy seeing them perform their daily chores, while you record videos of them.

Other encounters in the park include numerous bird species, mammals,  butterflies, and more.

Return back to the lodge, thereafter, you can proceed for the afternoon Canopy Walk on a long lodge suspended over the forest. The walk starts at Uwinka visitor center, and goes through the huge trees, as you enjoy the aerial views from the top of the trees. Animal to spot include, baboons, vervet moneys, red tailed monkeys,  butterflies, among others.

You will then trek back to the park head quarters after accomplishing the 2 hour walk. Meet the driver guide to drive you back to the lodge.

Day #5: Departure to Kigali

After breakfast,   join the driver for the last drive back to Kigali. Lunch will be en-route, and upon reaching the city, proceed for Kigali city tour to visit the iconic places that Kigali offers for exploration as: The Genocide  memorial  sites, Artisan shops, among others
