Day By Day Itinerary of the 6 Day Trek to 2 Portal Peaks Trek Of Rwenzori
Day #1: Nyakalengija 1640m – Nyabitaba camp 2650m.
Begin day 1 of the 6 day Portal peaks Rwenzori trekking adventure by approaching your guides and porters early in the morning and immediately the trek starts for 4-5 hours walk to Nyabitaba camp 2650m. You walk through the open farm lands and fields progressing in tall elephant grasses and peoples homesteads up to the park entrance gate. From the gate the trail takes you on the shores of river mubuku through the montane forest zones up to kyoho and mahoma rivers. Depending to the luck of the day,you might sight and endemical three horned chameleon and a lot of primates. After crossing river mahoma thetrail ascends you steeply to Nyabitaba ridges and camps for dinner andan overnight.
Day #2: Nyabitaba camp 2650m – Johnmaate camp 3505m.
The gloomy but breathtaking beautiful portal peaks greet you in the morning and shadow your right shoulder as you cross the confluence of the mubuku and bujuku rivers by kurtshuffer Bridge.
Climbing and descending through bamboo forest,moss and lichen festooned trees Leeds you to John maate camp. Here afternoon sun often brings a breathtaking glimpse of gold struck margharita and Alexanderia peaks and you would enjoy seeing the snows. It takes 7 hours walk from Nyabitaba to Johnmaate camp.
Dinner and an overnight.
Day #3: Johnmaate camp 3505m – Bukurungu Rock shelter (tent pitch)
Breathtaking views down the valley start your day and 5 hours of difficult boggy climb but rewarding conditions will see you through the bukurungu camp rock shelter. The vegetation zones is Heather/ rupenia where you can get a chance to see the Rwenzori red mountain duiker and rock hyrax.
Dinner and an overnight at bukurungu rock shelter.
Day #4: Bukurungu rock shelter – summit portal peaks – Rutara/middleportal peaks and kuhuma peak
Rising early, you prepare with your guides to attempt portal peaks, rutara/ middle portal peaks and kihuma peak at once. A difficult ascend on the steeply slopping rocks is followed by an easier but still challenging trudge in climbing boots up to the summit of the above mentioned beautiful peaks. After taking the nice photos there followed a careful descend to bukurungu rock shelter for dinner and an overnight.
Day #5: Bukurungu rock shelter – Johnmaate camp.
A thigh bursting bog but worthy doing leads you down to Johnmaate, camp and during this walk you can see a lot of rwenzori red mountain duiker and rock hyrax. Then the trail descends you slowly to Johnmaate camp for the 5th night.
Dinner and an overnight.
Day #6: Johnmaate camp – Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija .
Your final day and all you can think of is a hot bath and a restaurant meal,but you have to wait a bit long to walk through the swampy places and bamboo forests to proceed your second glimpse of Nyabitaba for lunch and a brief cup of hot tea and onward to nyakalengija.
