Detailed Itinerary of the 7 Days Rwenzori Kilembe Trail Trek

Day #1 : From Kilembe (1,450m) to Kalalama Camp (3147m)

Rise up to a tasteful breakfast treat, after then you will hike steeply through the valley up the tall forest trees of the forest Zone, which offers encounters of colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and L’Hoest Monkeys, not forgetting sighting the rare bird species as bird life of Ruwenzori Turaco. After here, you will proceed and reach Sine camp for a brief lunch break. Embark on your trek to Kalama Camp at 3147m for dinner, next day briefing and an overnight.

Day #2: From Kalalama Camp (3.147m) to Mutinda Camp (3.688 m)

Have breakfast at 7:00am, and depart at 9:00am,  trekking along the Bamboo-mimulopsis Zone consisting of a steep hike with many high steps, and later on arrive at the resting point where you will enjoy your lunch break.

Proceed along the heather zone, and trek through several streams, waterfalls, and the typical green moss vegetation. You will also walk-through Giant heather trees, and arrive at mutinda camp at 3.688m, which is also named after the Mutinda Peaks. It is from this point that you can hike up to the Mutinda Lookout, at 3.925m which is a 90 minutes walk , plus 60 mins descent to the camp. You will later arrive at the camp for dinner and an overnight.

Day #3: Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp (4.062 m)

Day 3 of the 7 days Rwenzori Kilembe trekking begins with a set off at 9:00am instantly after breakfast, for a trek through the boggy terrain with the typical wet vegetation and tussocks, whereby you will walk through the Alpine Vegetation Zone which features the giant lobelia, the groundsel and the everlasting flowers while crossing the mutinda Valley. Proceed up the steep section to Namusangi Valley, crossing various bogs as you climb up to Bugata Camp at 3.062m where you will have your dinner and an overnight.

You will enjoy magnificent views of the Weisman’s Peak of Mount Luigi of Savoy, that is always covered by the snow. The walk also leads you via Lake Kitandara that stretches up to the Democratic republic of Congo, and also enjoy incredible and  amazing views of the nine lakes down the valley and the Lake Nusurange while on the Rocks Plozza Rock.

Bugata Camp comprises of facilities with solar lights, eco-toilets and bathrooms. Have your dinner and spend the  in the evening and an overnight rest  at the camp.

Day #4: Bugata Camp to Hunwick’s Camp (3.974 m)

Wake up early for breakfast, after then proceed with your climb to Hunwick’s Camp. You will trek up the steep slopes, as you walk across various bogs to Bamwanjara pass at 4.405m. Enjoy breathtaking views of the snow caped peaks, while you proceed to rest in a small shelter for a lunch break. This Trek takes you through the lower and Upper Kachope lakes and McConnell’s Prong which are usually muddy and steep. Reach Hunwick’s camp in the evening for dinner and an overnight.

Day 5: Hunswick Camp to Magherita Camp(4,485m)

This morning, go on a 4.2 km trek to Margherita Camp, which takes you along the ridge, before crossing several wet regions as well as the small rivers flowing from Mt Baker and Fresh field Pass.  Trekking up the Scott Elliot Pass becomes so inspiring as you continue to Mount Stanley ridge of Margherita camp at 4485m, which is established below Elena Hut of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services.

Margherita Camp which is covered with a ring of hard rocks and was formerly used by the Italian Prince(Luigi Amadeo Di Savio and Duke of Abruzzi ). The Camp now offers incredible views of Mount baker, Scott Elliot Pass and part of the high glaciers on Mount Stanley.

Reach the park in the evening for dinner, and an overnight rest.

Day #6: Margherita Camp to Margherita Peak(5,109m) and back to Hunswick camp (4,485 m.)

This day 6 of your of the sought after scenic and breathtaking adventure, will take you up to margherita. Wake up at 2:00am to a hearty breakfast treat, thereafter depart for your Margherita ascent at 2:30am. Though considered the most difficult and challenging day among other trekking days of the 7 days Kilembe Rwenzori trekking. All hikers are require to carry along their hiking boots, crampons, ice axe, ropes, head lamps, and sun glasses( to protect the eyes from the glittering glaciers), among other hiking gear as per the Rwenzori guidelines from the park rangers, during briefing.

Upon arrival at 5109m, enjoy the unique scenic features and spectacular sceneries depending on the time interval that the group as well as the guide has agreed upon. Embark on your descent to HunWick’s Camp at 3.874m, for dinner and an overnight, though lunch will be  enroute.

Day #7: Descent to the Ranger post From HunsWick

Following your breakfast, slope down the valley(a home to various bird species that fly in and out of the pack), thereafter you will trek steeply on a 200m ridge which overlooks the valley, then cross a number of small valleys and streams to Kyalavula. Reach the base camp to pick your certificates for successfully attempting the Magherita peak of the Rwenzori Mountains.
